The breast shape, size, contour and nipple/areola may vary from one woman to another. Although any individual can benefit from breast augmentation surgery, those hoping for a breast enlargement commonly have disproportionately small breasts considered to be underdeveloped. Patients typically are fully grown adult, old enough to understand both the risks and benefits of surgery. If you have sagging breasts due to aging or multiple childbirths/breastfeeding experiences, then Dr. Placik will likely recommend a breast lift in addition to the standard augmentation.

So how exactly does a breast augmentation take place? First, under a general anesthetic, Dr. Placik will make a small incision, usually around only two inches in length. This cut is made in the fold of skin found beneath the breast, or sometimes around the bottom half of your areola. The incision can even be made in the underarm region if necessary.

After this incision is complete, Dr. Placik creates a pocket under the breast tissue or chest wall muscle, where an implant is then placed. You can choose between a silicone or saline implant, depending upon pre-surgical information, or you can sometimes request fat grafting instead of an a foreign body. This latter option is becoming an increasingly popular choice, known as “natural breast augmentation”, and Dr. Placik was the first surgeon in Illinois to participate in a national study evaluating the use of an external expansion device to improve the survival of the fat grafts. Liposuction is used to obtain the fat grafts from desired donor sites in sufficient quantity to accomplish the desired augmentation, typically one to two bra cup sizes.

As you heal from your breast augmentation, your body will form a capsule around the implant to secure it in place. Fat grafts will survive by receiving blood supply from the recipient tissues in the muscle and subcutaneous layers. A typical breast surgery only takes a couple of hours at most.

Immediately following augmentation, most incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures. During your post operative phase, a light compressive dressing may be applied. The recovery process may vary, with some normal bruising and soreness according to technique. This will all be discussed during your pre-operative consultation, where Dr. Placik and his team will provide you with all the time you need to bring up specific questions and concerns.

Your journey toward a more satisfying bust line begins with Dr. Placik’s office – here you will be educated, informed, encouraged to achieve the results and confidence you deserve.
